HM-SEM: PRAMAC launches a project for an intelligent hybrid microgrid based on AI and Digital Twin
Casole d’Elsa (SI), April 2026 – PRAMAC announces the launch of HM-SEM – Hybrid Microgrid for Smart Energy Management, a research and development project aimed at creating an intelligent hybrid microgrid for advanced energy management in the industrial sector. The project integrates renewable sources, storage systems, and traditional generation through a predictive Energy Management System (EMS), designed to efficiently and reliably optimize energy flows.
The project is coordinated by PRAMAC, an industrial company of the Generac Group and one of the main global players in the power generation sector, in collaboration with Erre Energie, Magenta Srl, the University of Siena, and Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna.
HM‑SEM is funded by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) through a non-repayable grant, awarded following the project’s selection within the framework of programs supporting the energy transition and industrial innovation. The partnership brings together industrial, technological, and scientific expertise with the goal of developing concrete, scalable, and transferable solutions to support the energy transition.
An advanced platform for energy management
HM-SEM was created to respond to the new needs for efficiency, resilience, and sustainability in industrial energy systems, overcoming the limitations of traditional microgrid management solutions. The project introduces an advanced approach that combines Digital Twins, artificial intelligence, and advanced digital architectures, enabling a more informed and predictive management of energy resources.
The project focuses on the development and application of integrated digital solutions for smart energy management, with particular attention to system interoperability, operational reliability, and the ability to adapt to complex and constantly evolving energy scenarios.
A demonstrative microgrid is planned to be built at the PRAMAC plant in Casole d’Elsa. The aim is to increase the production site’s energy efficiency and self-consumption, and to validate the model’s application in a large-scale industrial setting that represents the needs of the manufacturing industry.
Expected benefits and value for the industrial system
Thanks to a modular and scalable architecture, HM-SEM presents itself as a solution geared towards replicability and technology transfer, with potential applications in industrial contexts characterized by high energy complexity. The project contributes to the development of more flexible, autonomous, and integrated energy management models, perfectly in line with the environmental sustainability and competitiveness goals of the production system.
With HM-SEM, PRAMAC strengthens its commitment to the development of innovative, reliable, and industry-oriented energy solutions, confirming the company’s role as a key player in the transformation of power generation and management systems. The project represents a concrete step towards more efficient, resilient, and sustainable energy models capable of responding to the industrial system’s needs for competitiveness and energy autonomy.
In the coming months, HM-SEM will enter its operational phase with the development of project activities, the start of testing phases, and the validation of the demonstrative microgrid. The results obtained will form the basis for future applications on an industrial scale and for the evolution of high-value-added, replicable solutions to support the energy transition and the digitalization of industrial processes.
